The Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament (Big East Basketball Championship) is the men’s college basketball championship tournament of the Big East Conference. The Big East Basketball Championship exploded onto the scene in 1979, serving as a forceful battleground of competition for rival teams for 33 years until the conference split. In December 2012, the seven Big East Conference schools that do not compete football announced their intention to separate from the conference's football-playing schools to form an independent association. On March 20, 2013, the seven schools reached an agreement that enabled them to retain the name, and add in three additional universities. Presently, the Big East Basketball Championship is a single-elimination event featuring all 10 conference teams. The top six seeds take byes into the quarterfinals; the bottom four have to play first-round games for the right to join them there. This tournament is still known as for its level of high competitiveness, one of the nation’s toughest. Since 1983, the tournament winner received the conference’s bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
